What Are LED Parking Lot Lights?
LED parking lot lights rely on the energy efficiency and durability of LED lighting to illuminate parking lots. They can come in a range of styles but are always designed to ensure parking lots are well-lit at night. They are also versatile enough to use to illuminate other spaces.
Benefits of Installing LED Parking Lot Lights
- Energy Efficiency– The main advantage of LED lights for your parking lot over other types of lights is energy efficiency. This is good for the planet and also helps you keep your electric bills low. The energy savings can be up to 70%.
- Long Life Span – Another notable thing about LEDs is that they are highly durable. They last a lot longer than HID or other types of lights, meaning that you don’t have to replace them as often. This saves you money in the long run.
- Low Maintenance – The long life span of LEDs contributes to their low maintenance needs, as you don’t have to swap out the light bulbs as often.
- Better Quality Light – Many people agree that the light quality from LEDs is better than that from other types of lights. This comes partly from the fact that LEDs have a better rating on the Rendering Index. It also comes from the lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), which is buzzing or flickering. That lack of flickering and buzzing makes them easier on your eyes.
- Improved Light Distribution – Experts agree that the quality of LED lights is better, thanks to the improved light distribution. HID lights tend to deliver a single bright spot with a dramatic drop in brightness as you move away from the source. By contrast, LEDs tend to distribute the light evenly.
- Your Choice of Design – As with many other types of lighting, there is a variety of LED parking lot lights available. This means that you can typically find one that works well with your ideal design or style.
- Safety and Security – The act of installing any parking lot lighting, including LEDs, makes the space safer and more secure. Thieves are less likely to target cars parked in the lot as their chances of being caught increase with more light. This also reduces the chances of people in the parking lots being robbed, mugged, kidnapped, or attacked in another way.
- Can Retrofit or Install New Lights – One of the excellent things about LED parking lot lights is that you can install new lights that are LEDs from the start or retrofit existing parking lot lights to accommodate LEDs. Retrofitting will require some basic conversions and lets you get all of the benefits of LEDs with lower upfront costs.

How to Choose LED Parking Lot Lights
1. Consider lumens based on height.
Think about how you plan on setting up the lighting in the parking lot. Specifically, consider how high you want to place the lights on the poles. If you place them higher, you will need brighter lights to ensure the light reaches everywhere. This also allows you to space the poles out further apart.
If the lights are about 15–20 feet high, stick to 12,000 to 18,000 lumens. For lights that are 20–25 feet high, 20,000 to 30,000 lumens are ideal. Use 30,000 to 70,000 lumens for poles 25–35 feet high.
2. Consider the light color.
You will have to choose what color you want the light in the parking lot to be. This is commonly referred to as the Kelvin as it comes down to the temperature in Kelvin. Most LED parking lot lights will be about 5,000K, a white light that does best outside. You can also opt for 4,000K, a sharper white light that is more similar to daylight, or a 5,700K light with a bluish tint and potential environmental and health problems. Don’t go above this.
3. Consider photocells and sensors.
Think about how you want to decide when the lights will turn on and off. You can choose lights set by a timer, but another very popular option is to use photocells. These sensors sit on the light unit and turn the light on and off at the appropriate times.
How to Install LED Parking Lot Lights
1. Start by planning the number and spacing of the LED lights.
Before you start installing your LED parking lot lights, take the time to plan how you want to arrange them. You should figure out where to position them and how many you need. Start by deciding how many lights you want on each pole. Two is a common option, but you can fit up to four per pole.
The biggest factor will be how high up you place the lights on their poles when it comes to spacing. Taller poles let you increase the distance between the poles, as the light will travel further, assuming you opt for a large enough fixture. At the same time, you don’t want to place the lights too high due to wind issues or the risk of code violations.
Experts suggest keeping about 20–30 feet between poles if your lights are 15–20 feet high, 30–40 feet between them for 20–25 feet high, and 40–50 feet between lights that are 25–35 feet high.
2. Figure out if you are retrofitting or installing new lights.
Next, you have to work to figure out whether you will be able to retrofit your current lighting to work with LED lights or if you need to install completely new lights.
3. Prepare the Adapter plate and the rubber gasket.
Once you are ready to install your new LED parking lot lights, start by loosening and detaching the bracket’s adapter plate. Remove the rubber gasket as well.
4. Prepare the pole bracket.
You will now set up the round or square pole bracket, so it is next to the surface of the fixture, with the rubber gasket separating the fixture surface and the pole bracket. You will connect the pieces using a bolt.
5. Wire the light.
Now, you can push your light’s wire through the relevant holes on the pole bracket. This step protects the wire from damage from the weather. Connect the wire to your pole wire before connecting the junction box cover and rubber gasket using another bolt.
6. Make final adjustments.
Make the final adjustments, including adjusting the body of the lamp and bolting it into place.
